If I had $1,000,000,000 -- well, I'd make some changes. I'd probably want a few houses. For starters, a pretty townhouse in the West Village or in Brooklyn Heights; a beach house on Cape Cod; and a farmhouse in rural France somewhere. Also, if Mr. Smarty-Pants wanted a London keep and/or a Parisian garret I suppose we could take care of that, too.
I'd build a barn at Batland, my parents' summer shack, and have a few nice horses and hire someone to live in the apartment above the barn and take care of the horses when I wasn't around. Horses I would like include: a clydesdale or a percheron for bouncing around trails and sitting on bareback just for the hell of it; some kind of fancy warmblood for flatwork and jumping; a few smart little quarter horses for trails and company; and maybe some thoroughbreds -- probably retired race horses. My favorite horses I've known have been retired off the track -- some of them just escaping the barrel of a shotgun in lieu of retirement.
There are other things I'd do: spread the wealth a bit among family and friends; maybe set up some endowments for political and charitable causes near and dear to my heart; buy a lot of beautiful art for my passel of homes; send my kids to crazy-expensive alternative education schools; learn to knit; buy Mr. Smarty-Pants impractical designer suits that show of his beautiful silhouette.
But the number one thing I'd do if I had $1,000,000,000? I'd do a lot of yoga.
So... what about you?

Date: 2006-02-02 10:20 pm (UTC)Would quit the job very, very quickly and would putter around writing fiction.
Would adopt. Would also get nanny. Would also get multiple pugs and dog walker.
Before adopting of child or pugs, would go on long trip around the world, maybe for a year, inviting friends to join me at places en route.
Pay off all bills, of course, and invest well.
Donate much money to political causes I support.
Probably dress much more eccentrically.

And WORD about dressing eccentrically. I think I'd retain a personal stylist and have my whole head of hair colored purple and pink instead of just the front.

Date: 2006-02-02 11:17 pm (UTC)You know, I read this as a million dollars, and so my first reaction was, "and where are you going to get the other quarter million?" ;)
I'd have to tithe to various charities, and I'd have to set up my siblings, my cousin, and my mom, so there would go about 15% of it straight off, but after that...I'd split my year between NYC and various European capitals, and I'd spend all my time reading, listening to music, looking at art, eating good food, knitting, and writing porn.
