OK, I'm an apple person. The only thing I love more than my iPod is my iBook. I like their hardware, I like their software, and I really, really, really like their aesthetic. I like the idea of the Apple Store (though even I admit they kind of suck in person) and I like the idea of the genius bar (though I've never been).

But here's the thing. The genius bar at the SoHo store requires a reservation to see a genius. This reservation can ONLY be made online. And this reservation can only be made -- get this -- on the SAME DAY.

So the applecare phone guy told me to bring my iBook and iPod down to the genius bar so they can try to figure out why my iBook won't talk to my iPod through the firewire port anymore. I figure this'll be easy -- I'll make an 8-oclock appointment for some morning this week and get up early that morning and still get to work on time. Except I can't make this appointment until that morning, which means I'm going to have to get up at the ass end of dawn just to log on to the stupid concierge service and see if there's an appointment available that morning.

Not a huge inconvenience, but really kind of annoying.

Bleh.

Tell me about it. It's maddening. And of course the appt by no means means that you won't be kept waiting for 2 hours, so bring a book.

Actually, my real advice, forget the Genius Bar and go to Digital Society on E10th St. It's a Mac store and repair shop that is admirably uncrowded and competent. Do you have applecare for these machines? If so, they should be able to help you at no charge.

Most of them you can hop down to the store, and use another computer in the store to sign up. Bonus is that if you hang around long enough, people don't use all their time, or wander off, so you get to cut ahead.
