Biting my nails

So...when do we find out if SPN is getting a third season? As if this show didn't make me anxious enough already...

I'm anxious too! They'd better renew it. That's all I have to say.

I feel the need to add -- it's been a long time since a show I followed was cancelled before my fannish glee had run out. Buffy, Angel, X-Files--I'd drifted away from all of them by the time they got the axe. But Supernatural is still in full blush. And there is nothing like the pain of loving a show completely and having it yanked. /end meta

We probably won't find out definitively until the Upfronts in May, but frankly, I'm pretty sure you can bank on a third season. The network is holding this big promo competition for college students to make a promo of Supernatural. The winner gets an internship with the CW. A major part of the point of the promos, according to the press release about the contest, is to make a clip that creates buzz about the show. The contest ends in June, with the prize being announced then at a big ad convention. It makes no sense that they would be promoting a canceled show then. Even if the show were really on the brink, why would the CW want to focus attention on it?

There are a lot of other things arguing for renewal, including the publication of several books (episode guides for S1, novel tie-ins, the Supernatural Origins comic book); the fact that the CW will likely cancel Veronica Mars, whose numbers are worse than Supernatural's, the fact that Gilmore Girls likely won't return if its leads don't sign new contracts, so they just don't have that many shows; the fact that the CW promoted Supernatural at the Television Critics Association meeting in January, along with an already-renewed show; the fact that nothing else the CW has could do as well as Supernatural is doing in its hideous time slot. Basically, all signs point to Season 3. :D
