A thought about why I like slash: the hotness of INAPPROPRIATE LONGING! Also, may explain why (my taste in) slash is getting more outre as gayness becomes more mainstream. Two adult men in love? Used to be WOW! Now is yawn. So, make it a middle-aged potions instructor in love with a student. Make it a current Robin and a former Robin. thete1). That, at least, still has that certain je ne sais quoi - a frisson of kinky wrongness. Such angst! Love and sex are so much more interesting when they're fraught with impossibilities and taboo. Now that MAN-ON-MAN ACTION is more socially acceptable, maybe some of us are looking for some new taboo to screw around with.
Which also explains why I have this ongoing problem with Harry/Snape stories. I love 'em, you know, especially if there's lots of business with pained self-loathing and repression of inappropriate desires on the part of Snape but the problem is, if Harry is young enough to make it interesting (read: problematic), then he better not be in character. Cause as we all know? 16 year-old Harry is boring, predictable, silly, and annoying. He's a 16-year old. Hot, but annoying. I want an older, experienced, mature, interesting Harry in that tabooish package. And yes, I tried reading that Mirror of Eirised story, and no, it didn't do it for me. Probably because it wasn't written very well. At least, not the first thousand or so words, which is as far as I got. I'm not a very patient reader.
Also, I'm not really after stories where an absurdly uninformed and bashful Harry is gently guided into the world of healing ass fucks by Daddy!Snape. If it were my first time, I'd want to be the one doing the fucking. Wouldn't you? Well, maybe not. But this is my LJ.
I usually enjoy the "Harry returns to Hogwarts older, wiser, more cynical, and then he and Snape fall in love for evah" senarios. There, some of the taboo remains in place, based on resonances of old relationships between teacher and student. But there's still a likelyhood of an interesting HP characterization that isn't patently impossible.
Also, this may be a demand that will never be met - a story I may actually have to write myself... but people, please won't someone write a story where Harry kind of pushes around and intimidates Snape before pinning him against a wall and kissing him too hard?
