Hey, Flist! What can you tell me about DEATH NOTE? It came up in a business context recently, believe it or not, and I know I've heard about it on LJ...
Hmm, I like Death Note, although I haven't kept up with it. IIRC, it's drawn by the same artist who did Hikaru no Go.
*deep breath*
So there's this student ("Raito" or "Light," depending upon who you ask) who comes across a shinigami's (death god's) "death note" - it's like a notebook, only when you write someone's name in it, they'll die of heart failure within 24 hours (unless you specify another method of death). So he does.
Um, he decides to start his own little world-cleaning-up campaign, and kills known criminals using this method, and contacts the press with various claims and demands using the pseudonym "Kira". Um. His dad's a policeman of some sort; I can't remember his rank.
So everyone's terrified of Kira, and then there's a copycat killer, and there's a brilliant detective known only as "L" who turns out to be a young man Raito's age. (They're kind of slashy, of course, and Kira doesn't know L's full name, so he can't just eliminate him using his handy-dandy notebook...)
Also, Raito can see the shinigami whose death note it is, but nobody else can, and he can't see any of the other death gods.
...and I certainly hope that's enough of an infodump for now.
What would you like to know? It's a wonderful, actually rather intellectual shounen (boy's) manga, currently running in Shounen Jump (I believe) in Japan. It's by Tsugumi Ohba (writer) and Takeshi Obata (artist--the same artist did Hikaru no Go, and his work is just gorgeous). I have the first four volumes in Japanese (I think they're up to 6 volumes now, though), and scanlations up through chapter 62. It's also been licensed by Viz (damn them!), but the first volume won't be released until October.
There's some other information on Anime News Network here. If you want to know more about the plot, favorite slash pairings, etc., I'd be happy to fangirl it all for you sometime. *g* Oh, and I used this icon not to indicate boredom (far from it!) but because it features the main character from Death Note, Light. The wallpaper on my laptop is also from Death Note. *cough* <- is a fangirl *g*
