Fresh Direct

OK, NY-area folks. Do y'all use Fresh Direct? Do y'all LIKE Fresh Direct?

Here is why I ask.

I have used it twice. Last week, everything worked like a charm. This week, not so much.

1. The chili burst out of its container and got all over its box

2. The box with bread never arrived

3. Somewhere along the order process, the toilet paper and paper towel disappeared from the order.

4. Rectifying all of this took OVER AN HOUR of phone time with Fresh Direct.

So. Has this ever happened to you? Is this a regular sort of fuck up or an anomaly?

Sky and I used FD for over a year, with very few problems. Once or twice I got the wrong type of green (spinach instead of red leaf lettuce), and once an onion had gone off, but I never experienced the type of problems you had this week. Oh, wait, actually - one time they lost a box in transit. We called and re-scheduled, but they then showed up an hour later with the 'lost' box, so the re-schedule appointment was cancelled. It definitely didn't take an hour to get all that done, either.

Overall, I've had good experiences.

OK, then I'm going to stick with them for now.

Sky did move out in April, though, so Speranza's comment about declining service could hold true. I've only used them once since then. It's possible they've expanded too quickly.

Um. Not to say you shouldn't stick with them! I'm planning on using them again!

:D

They used to be terrific; I was a very early adopter. But more recently, service has slipped badly--food not as good, more broken things, etc. I don't know if this is a temporary thing or what, but I used to order weekly and now, I haven't in months.

I WORRY!!! But I'm willing to give them another chance. However, if next week is as lame as this week was, that's going to be it.

I've had soup containers break (although not since they started using the new containers, which are so sturdy they seem to require the Hulk to open them) and I have frequently had a single item left out of the order; when I call in with this, they either give me a refund or separately deliver the other item later with no fuss. It's an annoyance, but compared to the experience of standing a checkout line with screeching children and only being able to buy what I can carry up five flights -- I'm okay with it.

Yeah, that's the thing. I'll put up with a lot in the name of convenience. On the other hand... I could have gone out and bought the stuff in the neighborhood in the time it took me to force them to straighten it all out for me.

I've been using them for maybe a year, a year and a half, and occasionally had problems with the wrong vegetable being substituted or an egg breaking, but they've always given me the credit over email without a fuss. Once the guys lost a box on the truck, but they found it and brought it back an hour later, still in the delivery window. And once they were a half hour past the delivery window and gave me back the delivery fee when I complained.

I've found them so much easier and more reliable and the produce so much fresher than anything local, including Fairway; I went down to the Fairway Harlem store once, since I'm not in the delivery range for the UWS store, but it was more of a hassle and more things got damaged in transit and it wasn't appreciably cheaper.

I'm going to be getting my produce from Mr. Ahn's in the future regardless. He has a smaller selection, but everything is always fresh, and I love his cats. Do you ever go there? It's right across the street from that bougie gourmet grocery where I ran into you a couple weeks ago...

I have not gone there, but I am almost out of lettuce so perhaps I will check it out today. :)

I use them all the time and very rarely have problems -- sometimes they don't deliver something because it's out of stock, but almost never has it been the case that they charged me for something and it didn't come. And very rarely has stuff broken. I'd use e-mail to communicate with them, rather than phone, but tht is true for me under any circumstances. *g*

[identity profile] miss-pryss.livejournal.com 2006-10-16 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think maybe I'll try email next time... I just HATE sending emails out into the void like that, with no idea if anyone will ever read, let alone respond to them. With the phone at least you have the other person AT YOUR MERCY.

[identity profile] schuyler.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like an anomaly to me. I've been ordering from them at least once a month for almost two years and I've always loved it. I think the one time I had an issue (a box didn't arrive), it was maybe 15-minutes on the phone to schedule a redelivery.

[identity profile] miss-pryss.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, I'm glad to hear you say that. I think I'll stick with them and hope for better performance in the future...

[identity profile] harriet-spy.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I've had problems with about one out of every seven or eight orders, but they usually rectify it promptly.

[identity profile] miss-pryss.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
YOU! I haven't seen you in forever. How's the new job?

Also, thanks for the reassurance. I'm going to stick with FD for now...

[identity profile] harriet-spy.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've become even more mysterious and elusive!

The job is...I'm *billing* an average of 55 hours a week. So. Yes. What was the question again?

In addition, I heart your icon.

Thanks! Also we need to have lunch sometime soonish.
