Last night, I sat down to read an SGA story by a very respectable author. But I almost clicked the "back" button right away, because she misspelled John's name! She spelled it "Sheppard" like three times in the first paragraph.

I was shocked -- shocked! -- that someone so a) meticulous and b) experienced in SGA fandom would make that mistake. I shook my head in condescending wonder. What was the world coming to?

Then I thought, "but how is it spelled?"

And then I looked it up.

Yeah, oops.

Fandom can fuck your shit up. I often read correct words and have a moment of cognitive dissonance when I wonder if they should be the (incorrect) homonym or other regular mispelling.

Those homonyms are confusing -- their hard to keep strait!

It's like knowing a second language that is a slang or jargon or something (like I know the right term!) that you just automatically translate the idiom as you read.
